Data de-duplication has recently gained significant industry attention, especially for disk-based backup products. The benefits of de-duplication are compelling especially for backup systems, which by nature, are highly redundant. By implementing de-duplication technology, IT organizations benefit from lower acquisition cost and lower total cost of ownership (TCO) and gain the ability to cost-effectively replicate data - even in low bandwidth environments - for disaster recovery. However, the hidden risk of de-duplication is unrecoverable data. With dozens to hundreds of backup images dependent upon a single disk block, if that disk block is lost, all associated backup images could be unrecoverable. Unlike first-generation VTLs and disk appliances, NEC's HYDRAstor is the only solution that fully addresses IT's requirement for increased data resiliency in de-duplicated environments.
