Charles King at Pund-IT defines the phrase “workload-optimized systems” citing IBM Smart Analytics System as a true example. Oracle’s misleading Exadata TPC-C benchmark claims against old DB2 results are cited by Charles as an example of confusion elsewhere in the market today. He then describes the benefits of workload optimization and areas where return on investment can be high. He also discusses challenges workload-optimized systems present to IT vendors, differentiating true systems from solutions that fall short like servers or clusters with pre-loaded software and little else. Charles states that successful workload optimization requires knowledge of industry and business practices. He then cites many examples of optimized IBM systems over the years.  Looking ahead, he cites IBM’s work on Smart Analytics System, IBM Cloudburst, pureScale Application System, and a number of additional IBM efforts. Charles concludes by restating the value of workload optimization and by stating that IBM has more experience than other vendors in this area.
