CW EMEA: Shutting down cyber crime

Ransomware is a threat to businesses across the world, and huge sums of money are paid out to cyber criminals by corporate victims every year. In the Netherlands, the financial impact varies considerably. The average attack costs victims about €514,000, but attacks involving data exfiltration show significantly higher costs, averaging €2.1m. These huge sums mean it makes sense that the police invest their time and resources into combating the scourge of ransomware. A University of Twente PhD student spent four years embedded in Dutch police cyber teams to conduct research on fighting ransomware.
