Jargon buster guide to database management
By: TechTarget ComputerWeekly.com
Type: eGuide
Database management roles have long been a rich career seam for IT professionals. However, there has been, in recent years, a “Cambrian explosion” in the previously steady but sleepy world of databases.
The relational database model, breaking the traditional dependency between data storage and applications, held sway in enterprise IT for decades, from the time of its serious commercialisation by Oracle in the mid-7os. Also hegemonic has been the language implementation of the relational model, SQL – Structured Query Language; which is of the same mid-70s vintage.
But, in recent years, with the rise of the big data technologies of the Hadoop stack and the NoSQL databases, the data store and database scene has become more complex.
And when it comes to the Oracle database, its creator announced it to be “autonomous” at Oracle Open World in San Francisco October 2017. What does this mean for database administrators (DBAs)? Does it mean the opening up of new roles of higher intellectual interest and value? Or does it mean redundancy and early retirement?
As always with IT, the technology is only one-third of the story – the others being process and, crucially, people. What are the operational and organisational design problems to be solved in this more heterogenous database management landscape?
This Jargon Buster e-guide to contemporary database management is an aid to stepping back and thinking afresh about an area of enterprise IT that has many decades of heritage. Or, as many sometimes (arguably rudely) put it, legacy.

Infographic: Advantages and disadvantages of key-value databases
By: TechTarget ComputerWeekly.com
Type: Infographic
Different database types exist to serve different purposes. This sometimes makes the choice of the right type of database to use obvious. While key-value databases may be limited in what they can do, they are often the right choice for many different situations.
Unlike relational databases, key-value NoSQL databases do not have a specified structure. Relational databases store data in tables where each column has an assigned data type. Key-value databases are a collection of key-value pairs that are stored as individual records and do not have a predefined data structure.
Here are the main advantages and disadvantages of key-value databases.

Managed NoSQL databases for big data and AI-powered applications
By:
Type: Talk
Each type of NoSQL database offers unique strengths and is suited to specific types of applications and data requirements, making them versatile tools in modern data management. Many of them are compatible with an open source approach, giving you advantages such as the acceleration of innovation, flexibility, customisation, and community support. There are also innovations in the space where databases can run in a multi-cloud environment. However, these features and benefits come with their own set of challenges, and operating database clusters can be difficult. In addition, databases need to be integrated within a stack of technologies, such as the infrastructure it is deployed on and other data and AI tools. Faced with these and other challenges (like unpredictable costs and industry skill gaps), companies are finding it increasingly difficult to achieve operational excellence with an in-house team to manage databases. This is why they turn to managed service providers (MSPs). In this webinar, Canonical product managers Michelle Tabirao (NoSQL Databases) and Adrian Matei (Managed Services) will dive into what operational excellence means for NoSQL Databases, and how this can be achieved with a managed service provider. We will explore: 1) Introduction and main advantages of adopting NoSQL databases 2) Big data and AI use cases that leverage non-relational databases 3) Operational excellence in NoSQL Databases, from key operations to holistic approaches 4) Benefits and challenges when choosing a managed service provider for your NoSQL database operations 5) Future of NoSQL databases Join us on the 18th of June 2024 for 30 minutes of expertise in NoSQL operations!

PostgreSQL for Oracle database users
By:
Type: Talk
Compare two of the most advanced database management systems Oracle database is undoubtedly one of the biggest success stories in the last few decades of IT history. DB-Engines’ ranking still places it as the most popular database despite the growing competition. Oracle database pioneered a number of ideas in the database management landscape that inspired many commercial and open source competitors. PostgreSQL is one of those open-source alternatives that gained momentum in the recent years due to its vibrant community and ever-increasing number of extensions around its ecosystem (PostGis, TimescaleDB, Citus …). PostgreSQL’ first place in the last StackOverflow survey is an attestation of its success. PostgreSQL from an Oracle database user’s lens Whether you are considering a migration from your Oracle database to PostgreSQL or you are trying to add PostgreSQL to your internal catalogue of the data solutions, it is critical to understand the differences of PostgreSQL compared to Oracle database. In this webinar, we will dive into the development, operational and ecosystem differences between both solutions. We will draw a parallel between some of Oracle database’s most popular features (e.g. Active Data Guard, GoldenGate, RMAN) and their closest counterparts in the PostgreSQL landscape. How to migrate from Oracle database to PostgreSQL Understanding and analysing the differences between database solutions is the first step in a successful migration from one database to the other. In this webinar, we will present a methodology to execute your migration while minimising downtime and lowering the risk of data loss and performance degradation.
